Construction of one of Berks County’s two medical marijuana growing and processing facilities officially started this morning at a groundbreaking ceremony attended by Prime Wellness of Pennsylvania LLC and South Heidelberg Township leaders.
In the initial development phase, Prime Wellness will build a $5 million, 30,000-square-foot facility on an undeveloped parcel at 2 Corporate Blvd. in the South Heidelberg Industrial Park.
A 25,000-square-foot greenhouse is planned for the second phase, for a total of 55,000 square feet. The facility will be used to cultivate, process and package medical marijuana.
About 30 people are expected to be hired this year. About 100 varieties of marijuana will be grown, said James Dougherty, counsel for Prime Wellness of Pennsylvania.
